I purchased the Avalon fountain specifically for our cat with kidney disease hoping to encourage him to drink more water. As yet, he has shown no interest whatsoever.
However, my hope is that as our other cat begins to use it, he might follow her lead and try it.
Surprisingly, even though I have encouraged this other water-loving cat to come and investigate - and the sound of falling water always catches her attention - it has taken her more than a week to become interested in drinking from it. Just today it happened. Both she and our daughter's dog used it. So I am encouraged and have high hopes and will be patient while they become accustomed to it.
I very much enjoy the sound of softly falling water and like the classic look reminiscent of a bowl and pitcher. The (white) stoneware looks really nice and from other feedback I've read is better for them.
Other reviews have also mentioned cat hair and mineral deposits but I see no difference between this and what any pet water bowl with still water would collect. That is just a matter of routine maintenance. I have not yet done a complete cleaning on ours but the simple design makes it super easy to get to the pump and there's a great Drinkwell video showing exactly how to clean and maintain the pump.
For me, the only negative aspect is that the fountain is 'for indoor use only'. I would really like the have it permanently placed outdoors where our farm cats spend their day. Fortunately, it is light enough that I can set it outside the door of our bunkhouse during the day. ...not ideal but better that not at all. This is the only reason I would give the fountain a 4 rating rather than a 5.
