My cats prefer to drink from the stream, rather than the bowl. We started with a small Petmate fountain we received as a gift. But I had to fill it twice daily and clean it twice a week. Then I bought a Drinkwell Platinum fountain. Much better, but I still had to refill and clean too often. With this one, the largest I could find, I refill every three to four days and clean it every eight to nine. Better, though not perfect yet. I keep it on a low setting, and do not find it noisy at all. ...Nor do we have a problem with splashing. My only con is that I must disassemble it and take it downstairs to clean it properly. Why doesn't some wizard out there invent a self-cleaning fountain?!

"Its very noisy - the hum of the motor especially. We have it in our kitchen and you can hear it in the next room sometimes. I don't mind the water fountain sound though.
Food and hair debris contaminate the water and I find myself rinsing it out every 2 days at least."
