Picking the right fence for you and your pet

Choosing the right fence for your pet and your needs may seem overwhelming with so many choices. You may be asking: “What’s so deluxe about Deluxe?” Or “why go wired when wireless is so much easier to setup?” Here is a guide to make your decision a bit easier.

Our in-ground pet fences cover from 5 to 100 acres, so you can find a fence regardless of your yard size. Our complete fence kits include 500 feet of wire and 50 training flags - enough to cover 1/3 of an acre. For larger yards, you will need additional wire and flags.

Here is a handy guide on how much wire you may need:

• 1/3 Acre - 500 Feet
• 1 Acre - 1000 Feet
• 2 - 3 Acres - 1500 Feet
• 4 - 5 Acres - 2000 Feet

We also offer systems without wire if you are replacing an existing transmitter and collar.

Receiver Collars: You can add as many pets to your fence system as you’d like as long as they are wearing a Receiver Collar. Each containment system has a unique collar, in different shapes and sizes.  You can mix and match In-Ground Fence systems and Receiver Collars depending on the temperaments of your pets. For example, if you have a Yorkie and a hard to train German Shepherd you would want to get the Elite Little Dog Fence plus a Stubborn Dog Receiver Collar. Keep in mind that the In-Ground Fence Collars cannot be used with any Wireless Fence systems and vice versa.

The Standard In-Ground system comes with a basic collar with one level of static correction and covers up to 10 acres.

Deluxe Fences (In-Ground, Little Dog and Cat) collars all come with four levels of static correction and tone-only mode and cover up to 25 acres. Both the Little Dog and the Cat Receiver collars are designed to fit smaller pets. The Cat receiver also features a stretch section for your cat’s comfort.

The Stubborn Dog Receiver collar features four levels of adjustable correction and a tone plus vibration mode and covers up to 10 acres. The tone plus vibration mode is perfect for getting your stubborn pet’s attention or training a deaf dog to use the system.

The UltraSmart Dog Fence Collar has three levels of stimulation and a tone-only setting and covers up to 25 acres. This is the only PetSafe in-ground fence that is not compatible with the other systems. This system was formerly the Innotek Ultrasmart Fence (model IUC-4100) so it is compatible with UltraSmart Receiver Collar.

Training time: When it comes to training time there are NO shortcuts. For your pet to properly learn and understand his new boundaries, you MUST train your pet for 10-15 minutes two to three times a day everyday for at least two weeks. Some pets learn faster than others, but it's important to give training the time it requires.

The first week of training is about getting your pet used to his new boundaries. You will set up flags along the boundary of the fence, get your pet used to the Receiver Collar and distract him with things outside his limits to teach him to stay within his new play area. After your pet learns to stay within his boundaries, you will move onto the supervision stage.

Each day you will gradually increase the amount of time you spend outside with him to ensure he stays within his boundaries, even if left out to play for an hour or more. When your pet has proven he understands his boundaries, we recommend you monitor your pet’s activity for another two weeks. Once your pet understands his new boundaries, you will remove every other Boundary Flag every four days and training will be complete!

Using a 20-gauge wire to transmit a radio signal to an electronic collar, the system warns pets with a beep and then corrects them with a safe, gentle static correction when they approach the perimeter of the fence barrier. They quickly learn to stay within the designated area. Even the most stubborn dog will be deterred from straying.
